Deputy Prime Minister and two Senior Cabinet Ministers represented the Government of the Kingdom of Tonga at the 2nd Pacific ICT Ministerial Dialogue 2025 held at the Pacific Island Forum Secretariat in Suva, Fiji on Friday, August 8, 2025.
Tonga Government was headed by the Deputy Prime Minister & Minister for MEIDECC and MOI, Hon. Dr. Taniela L. Fusimalohi; Minister for Police and Public Enterprises, Hon. Minister Piveni Piukala; and Minister for Trade and Economic Development, Hon. Minister Kapelieli Lanumata.
Deputy Prime Minister Dr. Fusimalohi played a prominent role in the dialogue, serving as Chair for Session 3 on Ministerial Statements on "Digital Infrastructure" and "Digital Security and Trust" – key priorities under the Lagatoi Declaration. He also delivered ministerial statements addressing digital transformation, innovation and entrepreneurship, reflecting current developments in Tonga.
The one-day ministerial dialogue focused on advancing the six priority areas of the Lagatoi Declaration: Digital Transformation, Digital Innovation and Entrepreneurship, Digital Infrastructure, Digital Security and Trust, Digital Capacity Building and Skills Development, and Regional Cooperation and Representation.
The dialogue brought together ICT ministers from across the Pacific, along with development partners including the Asia-Pacific Telecommunity (APT), International Telecommunication Union (ITU), Global System for Mobile Association (GSMA) and private sector stakeholders to advance digital transformation initiatives across the region.
At the outcome of this dialogue, the Pacific ICT Ministers adopted the the Lagatoi Declaration, Strategic Action Plan, its Governance Framework, and the Ministerial Dialogue Communique, setting the foundation for enhanced regional cooperation in digital development over the coming years.
Ahead of the ministerial event, CEO for MEIDECC Mr. Sione Pulotu Akauola, and Director for Communications Mr. Stan Ahio, attended the 3rd Senior Official Meeting on 7th August 2025 where the endorsed declaration, the action plan, its governance framework, and its official communique were drafted and prepared for the dialogue.
