Monitoring Report Update Meeting for NEWS Project.

22nd November, 2019 The CEO for MEIDECC Mr Paula P. Ma’u met with key stakeholders this morning at MEIDECC’s conference room to discuss and report on the progress of the Nationwide Early Warning System and Strengthening Disaster Communications (NEWS Project).

The meeting was attended by representatives from Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA), Ministry of Finance, Tonga Broadcasting Commission (TBC), contractors from Japan and the Director of the Department of Communications.

Fifty per cent of the work scheduled at the construction of the new TBC Studio Building has been completed and the construction is expected to be completed and handover at the end of the April next year, 2020. The installation of equipment such as siren masts and Radio Activated Receiver is set to commence next year, and all will be completed and handover at the end of August next year 2020.

CEO Paula P. Ma’u thanked JICA, the Consultant Engineer Yachio Engineering Co. Ltd and the contractors from Japan, including the local contractor ‘Ofa Construction for all the hard work to bring the project to 50% completion and look forward to successful handover next year.
