21st June 2018 The Prime Minister of Tonga Hon. Samuela ‘Akilisi Pohiva launched the Public Service Excellence Program for the Government of Tonga, yesterday evening at Tanoa International Dateline Hotel.

In his remarks, Hon. Pohiva said this is a significant historical day for the Public Sector and for the Public Services.

“As we heard this initiative, the public service excellence program is an incredibly important game changer for government services. For it will positively transform systems, leadership, management and operations of the whole of government to service excellence for the people of Tonga.”

The initiative will focus on six areas critical for the effective operation of the Public Servants’ services which are;

  1. Leadership
  2. Strategy
  3. Citizens and customers
  4. Measurement, Analysis and Knowledge Management
  5. Workforce
  6. Operations

Hon. Pohiva told the gathering, that this program is a five year plan with an annual conference of the Ministries coming together to share where they are, in-terms of these categories.

“In the third year, we plan to run the first national awards event with experts from overseas assessing the growth of the Ministries. All in all, this program will enhance through applying best practices and new knowledge the operations of the Ministries in these six categories.”

In the Dedication Message of the Program the President of the Free Weslyan Church of Tonga Rev. Dr. ‘Ahio emphasised that Jesus is a great example of a noble Servant.

He also urged Public Servants, that working in the Government is not a competition but to serve the people of Tonga.

“The only great and noble Servant is Jesus, which is an example for us, working in the Government is not a competition of who will become the leader and who is more powerful, but to serve the people with a heart that is willing to do the work and to honor whatever responsibility that is given.”

Certificate were also awarded to the students that participated in the Poetry Competition.

Present at the event, were members of Diplomatic corps, Cabinet Ministers, CEOs from Line Ministries, Senior Public Servants and other guests.
