Green Climate Fund Readiness Preparatory Support Programme Launches Consultation & Awareness Programs in Vava’u

20th June 2018 The Tonga Green Climate Fund Readiness and Preparatory Support Programme (GCF-RPSP) under the Department of Climate Change, MEIDECC together with the Joint National Action Plan (JNAP) Taskforce was conducted a three days consultation and awareness programs in Vava’u from 18-20 June 2018 at Petani Hall, Neiafu Vava’u.

The consultation and awareness programs involved District and Town Officers, Non-Government Organizations (NGOs), Private Sectors and Government Ministries.

An opening remark of the consultation meeting with District and Town Officers was delivered by the Governor of Vava’u, Honorable Fakatulolo, where he expressed his gratitude for the team being present offering an avenue “to build the Vava’u Islands likening the Fund and Tonga to symbiotic fish who latch on to larger fish to gaining sustenance and to ensure that our progress, we must swim with larger fish”. Dr. Netatua Pelesikoti Taufatofua delivered the vote of thanks on behalf of the Ministry by thanking the Honorable Governor for established a compass to driving the works in Vava’u.

The main purpose of the consultations was to give an introduction to the GCF and its objectives, roles of the National Designated Authority (N.D.A), and the No-Objection Procedures. The second part of the consultation explained a brief explanation on JNAP 2, its key components, objectives outputs, sub-outputs and activities. Participants were divided into six groups to discuss the six objectives of JNAP 2 and to ensure that their priorities were included in JNAP 2.

The GCF-RPS Programme focuses on establishing processes in which will enable Tonga to access GCF funding faster while maintaining country ownership. It is also working towards strengthening potential partners in their capacity, preparedness and support to accessing finance through Green Climate Fund. The Fund will also assist Tonga to making a paradigm shift towards climate-resilient and low-emission.
