12th June, 2018 Ha’apai’s new Court House will be officially opened by the Prime Minister of Tonga, Hon. Samuela ‘Akilisi Pohiva on Friday, 15th June 2018 at 11:00am in Pangai, Ha’apai.

Due to the destructions caused by Cyclone Ian in January 2014 when the old Court House was extensively damaged, the Ministry of Justice decided to renovate the old damaged building in 2016 upon the initial concept to preserve the historic status of the building which has been recorded to be more than 100 years old, having been built between the years 1880 and 1900. However, in mid-2017, almost all the timbers of the old damaged building was found to be unfit, therefore, it was demolished in June 2017.

The construction of the New Court House was built by the Five Stars Construction Ltd and was funded by the Asian Development Bank (ADB) together with a complete set of new furniture as well an extension for the Judge’s bench.

In addition to normal judicial function, the Sub-registry for the District of Ha’apai will be housed in the same building. The main function of the sub-registry is to register Birth and Deaths and to issue Marriage licenses to members of the public.

The project duration was 4 months and 3 additional weeks commencing on 2nd October 2017 until the 26th February, 2018.
