24th May 2018 TONGAN The Prime Minister, Hon Samuela ‘Akilisi Pohiva, yesterday morning met with the UN Assistant Secretary General and UNDP Assistant Administrator and Director for Regional Bureau for Asia and Pacific, Mr. Haoliang Xu at the office at St George Government Building.

The purpose of Mr. Haoliang Xu’s visit was to discuss UNDP’s partnership with the Government of Tonga as well as the recovery effort after Tropical Cyclone Gita. UNDP had provided critical support for Tonga through the “Pacific Humanitarian Team” immediately after TC Gita.

In addition UNDP was instrumental in coordinating international assistance towards converting the Tonga National Cultural Centre in Tofoa into a temporary home of the Legislative Assembly after the 100 - year old Legislative Assembly building in Nuku’alofa had been destroyed by Gita. This ensured that the Legislative Assembly could meet in the first week of March as originally scheduled.

The Hon Prime Minister said, “On behalf of the Government and the people of Tonga, I want to thank UNDP for its partnership over the years as well as for its critical support and assistance in the wake of Tropical Cyclone Gita”.

Accompanying Mr. Haoliang Xu, who was on his first visit to Tonga, was Ms. Osnat Lubrani, UN Resident Co-ordinator and UNDP Resident Representative in Suva. The visitors were also scheduled to visit Cabinet during its meeting on Wednesday (16 May) morning, as well as make a site visit to ‘Eua, by boat on Thursday 17 May, to witness recovery efforts there.
