The Ministry of Information and Communications is the Government of Tonga's new engine for transition into a more connected and empowered society between its citizens and government, thus promoting a more accountable and transparent Government.

The Ministry is the main regulating body for all communication services, and has the role of lead communicator for government information in creating awareness of government policies, programs and activities.

MIC receives new professional Camera equipment from JICA

20 December 2011. Today, the Government of Japan through Japan International Co-operation Agency in Tonga (JICA) donated a set of professional digital camera equipment, worth TOP $2800 to the Ministry of Information and Communications to be used for the Government's media and news productions.

ICT Consultant, Mr. Hiromichi Suzuki of JICA, presented the equipment in a short hand-over ceremony to Mr. Paula Pouvalu Ma'u, the Ministry's Secretary for Information and Communications.

"JICA recognizes the growing importance of the work and role played by the Ministry of Information in providing quality news and information not only about the Government but its development partners - including national and diplomatic affairs of state that involve the members of the Royal Family," commended Mr. Suzuki.

"I understand that the Information Ministry is engaged in a very crucial task of accommodating public consumption and requests for information, and JICA offers its support in providing the equipment," Mr. Suzuki added.

The new equipment comprised of a professional Canon EOS 1000D DLSR digital camera with additional storage bag and memory cards accessories.

In receiving the new equipment, Mr. Paula Pouvalu Ma'u was very pleased with the recent development to the Information Department, where he said," "This exciting occasion marks the beginning of work to upgrade the Department's production equipment, which will be of immense benefit to enhancing the technical capability and performance of the Department."

"The Ministry wishes to convey its sincere gratitude and appreciation to JICA and the Government of Japan for this valuable technical assistance - and because of Information's imminent role in promoting transparency and accountability in Government, this donation was befitting and timely," Mr. Ma'u said.

The Ministry of Information is the Government's agency for coordinating the media coverage, publications and dissemination of Government-related initiatives, activities and programs.
