Japan and Tonga to establish the first Japanese Language Lab

18 March  2013, His Excellency Dr. Kazuchika Hamuro, Ambassador Plenipotentiary and Extraordinary of Japan to the Kingdom of Tonga, signed the grant contract (G/C) of the Project for the construction of a Japanese Language Center housed under the Tonga Institute of Education (TIOE). Dr. Rayelyn ‘Esau, Dean of the TIOE, signed the contract as the representative from the TIOE.. Mrs. ‘Emeli Pouvalu, Director/CEO for Education and Training, attended the Ceremony on behalf of the Minister for Education and Training.

Japan formally committed to provide a grant of US$117,234 dollars to establish the Japanese Language Center under TIOE.  The Project consists of one two-classroom building, equipments for language learning and faculty development (PC, LCD Displays, and DVD players, and other items), and more than 80 Japanese language textbooks, written either in Japanese or English as well as 30 audio-visual program DVDs.  The center aims to provide a better learning environment for Japanese language learners and a hub for the faculty development of Tongan Japanese language teachers, collaborating with JICA volunteers.

His Excellency stated that the promotion of Japanese language education would be one of the center pillars of the Embassy’s activities and hoped that working with its partners the various related activities were streamlined and became more accessible.  The Embassy of Japan in the Kingdom of Tonga and the Ministry of Education and Training, in collaboration with Japan Foundation, are preparing for their annual Japanese language competition to be held in the coming May.  He also expressed his wishes for the active contribution to the competition by teachers and students of TIOE.
