The Ambassador of Japan to Tonga, H.E. Dr. Kazu-chika Hamuro, handed over to the

Minister of Public Enterprises, the Hon. S. Fe'aomoeata Vakata, spare parts worth $1.1million pa'anga for Tug Boat MV Hifofua at 10am this morning, Wednesday 13th February, 2013. The Tug Boat Hifofua was built in Kobe , Japan and donated by the  Government of Japan to the Government of Tonga in 1994 for the use of the Ports Authority as a harbour tug. It also has capacities for fire fighting and salvaging. The tug is designed and incorporates weather deck space at the aft rigged with a large hydraulic controlled tow hook for towing and salvaging of either vessels broken down in mid-ocean, stranded or any other type of heavy marine works.

This tug boat has been a very useful boat for Ports Authority of Tonga for managing overseas vessels at the harbour. Ports Authority has been responsible for the operation and maintenance of this boat over these many  years with frequent dry docking in Suva, Fiji. The last dry docking was in December last year, 2012.

The spare parts are for the engines of the tug boat. The main engine is a Twin Screw -Yanmar 4 Stroke  6 Cylinders. The spare parts are highly essential for replacement of parts that have been operating for more than 10 years.
