Japan funds projects for Educational Facilities for the disabled

15 February 2013 The Grant Contracts formalizing the Government of Japan providing assistance to upgrade two educational facilities supporting people with disability were signed between His Excellency Dr. Kazuchika Hamuro, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Japan to the Kingdom of Tonga, and the representatives from Ngele'ia Government Primary School and the Mango Tree Centre at 10:00am Friday, 15th February, 2013.  Honorable Dr. ‘Ana Maui Taufe'ulungaki, Minister for Education and Training also attended the ceremony.

H.E. Dr. Kazuchika Hamuro emphasized that nobody be excluded from Tonga's development process, and these two projects aimed at providing persons with disabilities a proper access to education and training facilities.  "Today's event is, therefore, the most evident manifestation of the vision shared by the Government of Japan and the Government of the Kingdom of Tonga," he said.   Hon. Dr. Taufe'ulungaki, Minister for Education and Training, acknowledged Japan's ongoing assistance towards education in the Kingdom.

The Government of Japan has supported Ngele'ia Government Primary School's renovation and extension since 1996.  The project formalized this time is the forth project funded by Japan's Grant Assistance for Grassroots Human Security Projects.  The Mango Tree Center has also received technical assistance from the Asian Development Bank, funded by Japan Fund for Poverty Reduction.  The project to upgrade the facility of Mango Tree Center aims at supporting the organization's collaboration with the ADB.  Along with these projects, the Government of Japan supported 6 projects to improve the access to education for the disabled.
