13 February 2013, His Excellency, Dr. Kazuchika Hamuro, Ambassador Plenipotentiary and Extraordinary of Japan to the Kingdom of Tonga, officially handed over fenders, equipments, and other spare parts of MV Hifofua.

Honorable Sosefo Fe’aomoeata Vakata, Minister for Public Enterprise also attended the hand-over ceremony.

In his statement, His Excellency, Dr. Hamuro expressed his appreciation to the efforts made by the Ports Authority to use MV Hifofua most effectively and maintain her properly so that she had served for the People of the Kingdom of Tonga for almost 20 years.

The Project for Provision of a Port Service Vessel in Kingdom of Tonga was formalized between the Government of Japan and the Government of the Kingdom of Tonga in 1993.  The port service vessel was named MV Hifofua, after the official hand-over in 1994.

Upon the request from the Ports Authority, the Government of Japan decided to provide a follow-up assistance on this project, taking into consideration the vital role that MV Hifofua played for 20 years in maritime safety in Nuku’alofa as well as efforts made by the Ports Authority until today.
