Japanese Exchange Students visits Tonga under JENESYS Programme

5  May 2012 Five Japanese youths visited Tonga last week, as part of the JENESYS Programme (Japan-East Asia Network of Exchange for Students and Youths) and had the opportunity to meet with the Tongan Prime Minister, Lord Tu'ivakano on April 30.

This was Tonga's first time to receive a dispatch delegation under JENESYS with interest in the Pacific Islands in order to strengthen the relations between Japan and Tonga.

The JENESYS participants were students from various Universities in Japan namely, Kyushu University (Mr. Shota AGA), Okayama University (Mr. Takumi IWATA), Tokyo University of Agriculture (Ms. Sayuri OKI), Hiroshima City University (Mr. Daiki SHINBARA) and the University of the Ryukyus (Ms. Chiriro HINAZAWA).  The students were accompanied by staff members under the programme, Ms. Masako Turumi and Mr. Tomoyuki Kuwahara.

While in Tonga, the students also visited the Tonga Institute of Higher Education, ‘Atata Island and experience Tongan lifestyles through home visits and participate in an Under 20 Rugby Football Tournament in Nuku'alofa.

The JENESYS program is funded by the Government of Japan. Under this program is has three types of project Has 3 types of project; invitation, dispatch and exchange program for youth in different areas since 2007.

Japan announced at the Second East Asia Summit (EAS) in 2007 to have a large-scale youth exchange programme, inviting about 6,000 young people to Japan mainly from EAS member states (ASEAN, Australia, China, India, New Zealand, the ROK) every year for five years, with a view to establishing and reinforcing a basis for Asia's stalwart solidarity by expanding youth exchange. Based on this plan, the Government of Japan launched the JENESYS Programme.

In June 2011 four Tongan youths participated in a JENESYS program focusing in disaster prevention/management cooperation programme held in Japan.

One of the implementing organizations for this programme, the JCE  (Japan International Cooperation Centre, have worked together with various governments, schools on an international exchange programme of which Tonga, among other Pacific Island Countries  has partaken in the previous years .

Since 2007, the Japanese Government have launched this project from a standpoint of providing a sound foundation for strong solidarity within Asia through large-scale youth exchange and promoting mutual understanding and friendly relations with other participating countries including the Pacific, as under the ASEAN .
