Japan commissioned the new nursery to the Viola Hospital

The Government of Japan officially commissioned the new Neo Intensive Care Unit (NICU) to the Viola Hospital/the Ministry of Health of the Government of the Kingdom of Tonga, on February 15, 2012.

H.E. Mr. Yasuo Takase, Ambassador of Japan to the Kingdom of Tonga, attended the commissioning ceremony, where Honorable ‘Uliti Uata, Minister for Health, and, Dr. Lei Saafi, Acting Director for Health/Acting Head of the Viola Hospital. In his speech, H.E. Mr. Takase reiterates Japan's commitment to assist the efforts to achieve Millennium Development Goals by the Government of the Kingdom of Tonga. He also mentioned that the health sector remained the priority area for Japan's assistance in Tonga and would like to work on the further betterment of the health sector in the Kingdom of Tonga.

The installment of the NICU in the pediatric ward is one of the two components of the follow-up of the Project for Upgrading and Refurbishment of the Viola Hospital (Phase I), which was implemented from 2004 and 2006, under the cooperation with the Government of Japan and the Government of the Kingdom of Tonga, through Japan International Cooperation Agency. The installment of the NICU was requested by the Ministry of Health to deal with the increasing trend in the infant mortality rate since 2005. Another component of the follow-up is the replacement and upgrading of one of two sterilizers, which was also requested by the Ministry of Health of the Kingdom of Tonga. The new sterilizer has already started its operation.

The Government of Japan has supported the health sector for many years, in addition to the Viola Hospital, through its Grant Assistance to Grassroots Human Security Projects (GGP), total 48 JICA volunteers and other various schemes. The Embassy of Japan in the Kingdom of Tonga/JICA Tonga office expect that, through this follow-up, the Viola Hospital provide a better and cleaner environment in the existing wards to serve for the welfare and health of the People of the Kingdom of Tonga. The Phase II of the Project for Upgrading and Refurbishment of the Viola Hospital, which is in progress, is to be completed soon and the commissioning is scheduled to April, 2012.
