The Government of Japan under its Grant Assistance for Grassroots Human Security Project, GGP assisted the Fonoi Village in Ha'apai with provision of twenty six, 5,000 liters water tanks. H.E Mr. Yasuo Takase, the Japanese Ambassador in the Kingdom of Tonga hand-over the project on Wednesday, 29th of November, 2011.

At the hand-over ceremony His Excellency reiterated essential to access clean water at all times, and that Japan's GGP is specifically designed to improve basic human needs and further developing grassroots communities, like Fonoi Village.

This year in March, the Government of Japan committed financial assistance totaling US$53,090.00 (TOP$ 92,798.68) for the Project for Upgrading of Water Tank for Fonoi Village. Twenty six 5,000 liters water tanks were transported and constructed at school, church compounds, and residence at Fonoi village by the Rotomould (Pacific) Ltd in Nuku'alofa.

With the new water tanks, the people of Fonoi village obtain the access to cleaner and healthier water. Fonoi is located 33 miles away from Pangai, Ha'apai, and has a population of approximately 100 people. People in Fonoi village collected rain water in tubs and buckets for their daily use. Due, to the depreciation and damages, stable water supply has been a concern for the community.

Japan's support will supplement storage capacity, relieve pressure and ensure stable adequate supply of water for the betterment of the people of Fonoi village. The Embassy of Japan hoped that this assistance will help further strengthen the friendly ties between the governments and the people of the Kingdom of Tonga and Japan.
