New Japanese-funded Children's Ward for Niu'eiki Hospital

22 July 2011

H.E. Mr. Yasuo Takase, Ambassador of Japan to the Kingdom of Tonga visited ‘Eua on July 18th to attend a commissioning ceremony of the Project for Children's Ward and Clinic Building of Niu‘eiki Hospital.  Honorable Sunia Fili, Minister for Finance and National Planning, and Honorable Uliti Uata, Minister for Health, and members of Board of Visitors of Niu'eiki Hospital also attended the ceremony.

In March 2009, the Government of Japan formalized to assist Niu‘eiki Hospital with US$97,072.00 (TOP$175,000) to enable construction of 1 children's ward building and 1 clinic building, under Japan's Grant Assistance for Grassroots Human Security Project (GGP). The construction work was successfully carried out by Kiwi Tonga Limited.

With completion of the new buildings the Niu‘eiki Hospital can now accommodate children at a separate and safer ward as well as patients suffering from non-communicable diseases at a separate ward so that patients can benefit from better consultations and treatment.

Niu'eiki Hospital is the only hospital that serves for communities in ‘Eua at this moment.  The Government of Japan expects that the hospital continues to provide with quality supports and treatments for communities in ‘Eua.  The Government of Japan has also assisted Niu'eiki Hospital with the dispatching of a JICA volunteer with nursing skills in February, 2011.

These assistances epitomize Japan's commitment to support efforts by the People and the Government of the Kingdom of Tonga to ensure basic human needs and achieve the Millennium Development Goals.
