18 February, 2011.  H.E Mr. Yasuo Takase, Ambassador of Japan to the Kingdom of Tonga, along with Lord Havea Tu'i Ha'ateiho, officially opened the new upgraded water supply system for Ha'ateiho village on Friday, February 18th 2011.

The Government of Japan, under its Grant Assistance for Grassroots Human Security Project (GGP), granted financial assistance of a total of US$81,096.00 (T$149,215.00) to cover the material and construction cost for "The Project for Upgrading of Water Supply System for Ha'ateiho Village."

The new upgraded water supply system replaced the old system built in the early 1960's. People of Ha'ateiho village celebrated provision of 2 pump units, 2 pump houses, a 5000 gallon tank, a tank stand and pipes. Leakage and deterioration of the old water system disrupted the water supply in the village in previous years. Clean and better water supply will now be accessible to about 2400 people of Ha'ateiho village.

Japan's GGP is specifically designed to address basic needs at the grassroots level which include water supply, health, basic education, vocational training, sanitary environment and rural infrastructure.

Japan is committed to assist the improvement of living standards and welfare of the people in the Kingdom of Tonga, which is in line with its Official Development Assistance (ODA) policy. It is hoped that this assistance will contribute to further strengthen the friendly ties between the Governments and the people of Japan and the Kingdom of Tonga.

END.
