11 February 2011 H.E. Mr. Yasuo Takase, Ambassador of Japan to the Kingdom of Tonga, handed over a Welfare Vehicle for Tonga Red Cross at 11:00am on Friday, February 11th 2011.
The ceremony that took place at Tonga Red Cross marked the official handing over of a vehicle to accommodate for those who are using wheelchairs. The vehicle includes a lift that can safely and promptly transport OTA students, assist the transportation for the Alonga Centre, and provide 24 hours services to handicapped people who need transportation within Tongatapu. This assistance will benefit the current 148 students and staff of Tonga Red Cross Society.

The funding for this vehicle was sourced from Japan's Grant Assistance for Grassroots Human Security Project (GGP) with a total cost of US$76,401 (TOP$140,185.49). This assistance indicates Japan's commitment to address basic needs at the grassroots level which includes education, health, water supply, vocational training, sanitary environment and rural infrastructure.

It is hoped that this assistance will contribute to further strengthen the friendly ties between the Government and the people of Japan and the Kingdom of Tonga.

Issued by the: Embassy of Japan Office, Nuku'alofa, 2011.
