31 March 2014 NEMO continued the flood response and mitigation operation in the Atenisi area in Kolomotu’a at 16.00 hrs today (31 March).
Tonga Fire Services, assisted by NEMO staff, commenced the operation at 15.00 hrs on Friday, 28 March 2014, working until 20.00 hrs on Saturday night. HMAF took over for the period from 20.00 hrs to 23.00 hrs on Saturday, when the operation concluded temporarily.
Despite rain over the weekend, the level of water at the school has been lowered considerably at the Atenisi Community School, compared with the situation last week. However, significant amounts of water remain on the school campus and in surrounding properties. NEMO will focus on completing the operation in the Atenisi area in the next two days.
The success of this operation depends on community participation to ensure that Government personnel are not (Tonga Fire, HMAF and NEMO) are not overstretched. Thus far, the Town Officer of Kolomotu’a has rallied a good level of local support for operation.
Thus far it is estimated that 1.4 million litres of water have been pumped out of the area.
