06 November 2013 It is well-known with in the construction industry in Tonga that the 'Ahononou Quarry is the only source of high quality rock on Tongatapu and is between 1.4 and 2.8 times stronger than any alternative rock source.

The Quarry has been closed for 7 years and was recently tendered publicly for the private sector to take over the operation of this importance resource for the benefit of the public and private sector.

This Quarry has been an important source of rock for the construction of sealed roads throughout Tongatapu, including the road between the Queen Salote Port and the Airport. The runway at the airport was also sealed using this same material about 20 years ago.

Because of a lack of funds the Ministry of Works close the quarry. Consistent with the Tonga Strategic Development Framework, the Ministry of Infrastructure decided to divest the operation of the Quarry to the private sector, which was seen to have the business skills and capability and resources to run the quarry successfully.

There are a number of opportunities for the reopening of the Quarry including potentially the resealing of the runway at Fua'amotu Airport which is now due for rehabilitation as well as repair of a number of roads around the island. It is possible that it could deliver up to 19,000m3 per annum of crushed for various projects employing up to 23 people.

The Ministry of Infrastructure is pleased to announce the signing of a contract with Mr Sekitofa Malupo of Petani Quarry. The Ministry now looks forward to its successful operation for years to come.
