05 November 2013 An intensive training workshop on the Asset Management for Public Enterprises was held Thursday 31 st October at the Moulton Hall- FWC of Tonga Office, hosted by the Ministry of Public Enterprises.

There were 30 participants comprising of CEO’s and managers of fifteen (15) Public Enterprises.  
‘Overall total assets of Public Enterprises are worth over $300million pa’anga, hence the companies need to ensure that appropriate plan is set to maintain and manage these assets to the best of their ability. The Ministry recognizes this as a key initiative and, with the assistance of PUMA and ADB, why we convene this important workshop’ said Mr. Siaosi Sovaleni, CEO of Public Enterprises. He stated that the Minister of Public Enterprises, Hon. Sosefo Fe’ao Vakat ā, would like all public enterprises to have asset management plans by March 2014. He further added that public enterprises need to utilize services and resources that are locally available rather than relying only on development partners. He acknowledged the collaboration with PUMA and ADB who provided Mr. John Gildea, Team Leader for the Nuku’alofa Urban Development Sector Project (NUDSP)/ PIAC Team, together with his team to conduct the workshop. He further acknowledged Tonga Water Boards and Waste Authority Limited for providing support costs for the workshop.  

“Something that has potential value to an organization should be monitored and maintained; with such an asset management plan is essential.” stressed Mr. Gildea. He added that developing such a plan needs to follow certain robust methodology.  

The Ministry of Public Enterprises has identified the need to build the capacity of the Public Enterprises but also the Ministry itself. After this workshop the trainer and team members of the NUDSP/PIAC Team are available to assist the public enterprises to develop their Asset Management Plans.
