03rd March 2017 The Department of Environment here in Tonga has a new website, following the launch earlier this afternoon here at the department’s conference room.

The Chief Executive Officer for the Ministry of Meteorology, Energy, Information, Disaster Management, Climate Change and Communications (MEIDECC), Mr Paula Ma’u launched the new website, which aims to help promote the department’s programmes and events.

Mr Ma’u said the website - www.environment.gov.to - will become an important tool for the Department in sharing news on events and information about issues of importance that they would like to share with members of the public, partners and stakeholders.

“Modern technology now gives us more options on how best we can relay our news and information, in the hope that we can inform our people and the masses so that they can make responsible decisions for themselves as individuals, their families and their communities,” Mr Ma’u said.

“With the advance of technology and the availability of the cable service we are now able to enjoy better internet connections - thus providing the environment for websites such as the one we are going to launch today to be developed and used in relaying information of the Department’s programmes, events and achievements.

“That in turn increases Government’s visibility in general.”

The Director of Environment Ms Atelaite Lupe Matoto said the new website is an important tool in the department’s work programme.

She said the launch of the new website marks another milestone for the Department of Environment, especially in ensuring that the work done is promoted and highlighted so that members of the public can be informed.

“Information is important and sharing that information will help people understand what we do and at the same time also assist them in their individual and collective decision making,” she added.

The website is part of the Tonga Ridge to Reef project under the department and is supported by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) with Global Environment Facility (GEF) funding.
