China Delegation Shares Development Experience with Tonga

20th October 2015 On 17-20 October 2015, at the invitation Legislative Assembly of Tonga, a delegation from International Department of CPC visited Tonga. In the morning of 19 October, the Seminar on Service Orientation Government Construction was held in Chinese Embassy. Hon. Prime Minister 'Akilisi Pōhiva and H.E. Ambassador Huang Huaguang jointly opened the seminar. In his opening remarks, H.E. Ambassador Huang said, “China and Tonga are both developing countries and both of us are facing the crucial task to develop our economy and improve the livelihood of our people. To achieve a comprehensive, balanced and sustainable development, government plays an outstanding role.” In the seminar, Chinese officials share China’s experience in poverty reduction, attracting foreign investment and developing ocean economy. It was attended by senior officials from Ministry of Internal Affairs, Ministry of Agriculture and Fishery and Ministry of Labor and Commerce.

In the afternoon of 19 October, the delegation was invited to the House to introduce the Belt and Road Initiative, which is short for Silk Road Economic Belt Road and 21st Century Maritime Silk Road. The initiative mainly focuses on improving the connectivity of policy infrastructure, trade, finance and people-to-people among countries along the Belt and Road, which including the South Pacific. Hon. Speaker Lord Tu’ivakano, Hon. Prime Minister 'Akilisi Pōhiva and most Member of Parliament was present at the meeting and had good discussion with the delegation about how to further promote bilateral cooperation within this framework. Both sides agreed that with joint efforts from both sides, China and Tonga can realize win-win cooperation in sectors like infrastructure, trade, education, tourism and etc.

The delegation will depart Tonga in the evening of 20 October.
