APT Secretary said ICT discussions important

15th June 2015 TONGAN The new Secretary General of the Asia Pacific Telecommunity (APT), Ms Areewan Haorangsi, said discussions this week on Information Communication Technology (ICT) is important for the region.

Speaking at the opening of the APT 8th Policy and Regulation Forum for the Pacific (8th PRFP) here at the Fa’onelua Convention Centre, in Nuku’alofa this morning, Ms Haorangsi said the meeting will formulate plans and issues that will be taken to the Pacific ICT Ministers Meeting here on Friday.

In her welcoming address to delegates, guests and chief guest Deputy Prime Minister Hon Siaosi Sovaleni, Ms Haorangsi said it was important that delegates discuss issues that could help Ministers formulate plans for the way forward.

The three-day meeting started off with an opening prayer from the Vicar General of the Catholic Church here in Tonga, Father Lutoviko Finau, who also closed off the opening session with a prayer.

Hon Sovaleni then delivered the key-note address for the workshop, adding on to Ms Haorangi’s call for discussions on ICT issues that would help Pacific Island Countries develop.

Close to 50 delegates from around the Pacific are attending the meeting.

The Pacific ICT Officials’ meeting will open on Wednesday afternoon at the same venue, with issues discussed at the meeting today and over the next two days also being lined up to be tabled at the Wednesday afternoon session.

Friday will then see the ICT Ministers discuss plans and programs that would be the way forward for ICT development in the region.
