Tonga to host major International Information, Communications and Technology (ICT) Meetings

13 June 2015 Tonga will be hosting the Pacific ICT Officials and Ministerial Meeting 2015 together with the 8th Asia-Pacific Telcommunity (APT) Policy and Regulation Forum for Pacific (PRFP-8) at the Fa’onelua Convention Centre in Nuku’alofa next week, 15-19 June, 2015 .

The 8th APT Policy and Regulation Forum for Pacific (PRFP-8) will be held from 15-17 June with objectives to facilitate progress of the Actions to implement the Brunei Darussalam Statement that are relevant to the Pacific; facilitate measures to accelerate telecom and ICT infrastructure development (particularly broadband) and promote e-applications; exchange information and share ideas in a common forum for Pacific Island Countries; and address key Policy and Regulatory concerns for the Pacific.

This meeting will be opened by the Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for the Ministry of Meteorology, Energy, Information, Disaster Management, Environment, Climate Change and Communications (MEIDECC), Hon. Siaosi Sovaleni, with about 80 participants expected to attend.

The Pacific ICT Official Meeting will start from 17-18 June to discuss key strategic ICT issues and provide appropriate advice that require specific direction and decisions by ICT Ministers. This meeting will be opened by the Minister for internal Affairs, Hon. Fe’ao Vakata, with about 80 participants expected to attend.

The Pacific ICT Ministerial Meeting 2015 will be held on 19 June aimed to review the progress of ICT development in the Pacific region, Inform decision makers about results of the Framework for Action on ICT for Development in the Pacific, and to build and strengthen partnerships and cooperation among the Pacific Island Countries and Territories including other international and regional organizations.


The meeting will be opened by HRH Crown Prince Tupouto’a ‘Ulukalala, with about 100 participants expected to attend.

The Meeting is hosted by the Government of Tonga through the Ministry of Meteoroly, Energy, Information, Disaster Management, Environment, Climate Change and Communications (MEIDECC), and organized with the support of various partners.
