16th April 2015 English | Tongan Mr. Sione ‘Uhila Liava’a has been appointed as part time Chairperson of the Public Service Commission for a period of four (4) years with effect from10 April 2015, the date of the Cabinet decision.
Mr. Liava’a’s appointment replaces the incumbent part time Chairperson, Mrs. Mishka Tu’ifua, whose Public Service Commission’s contract ends with effect from 10 April 2015.
The job for chair of the Commission was advertised with five shortlisted candidates being interviewed, including Mr. Sione ‘Uhila Liava’a, Mr. Lisiate ‘Aloveita ‘Akolo, Dr. Taniela Fusimalohi, Mr. PenisimaniVea, and Mr. Filimone Fifita.
The panel of three who were selected to interview the candidates included Hon. Semisi Fakahau, Dr. Uili Fukofuka, and Ms. Mele ‘Amanaki.
The appointment of Mr. Liava’a is in accordance with Sections 4a, 4b, 4c, of the Public Service (Amendment ) Act 2010, having to do with the Powers and Functions of the Prime Minister, namely, to appoint the Commissioners with the consent of Cabinet in accordance with due process.
Mr. Liava’a comes as Chairperson to the Commission with years of experience in the Civil Service, having served as Accountant General, Secretary of Finance, as well as a retired Member of Parliament.
