26th July 2014 The Prime Minister of Tonga, Lord Tu’ivakano, today joined members of the Polynesian Leaders Group at their fourth meeting held in Auckland.  The Polynesian Leaders Group was founded by 8 members including American Samoa, Cook Islands, French Polynesia, Niue, Samoa, Tokelau, Tonga and Tuvalu. The Group seeks to strengthen cooperation among Polynesian people.

In acknowledging the convening of the upcoming Pacific Islands Leaders Meeting in Palau and the 3rd International Conference on Small Island Developing States (SIDS) in Samoa, the meeting deliberated on matters of mutual interest and discussed a range of issues including climate change, energy, sustainable development and Tokelau’s application to be an Associate Member of the Pacific Islands Forum Secretariat.

“With our shared heritage and close links through Polynesia, the PLG provides an important platform to share experiences and best practices that will in turn help us leaders make strengthened decisions on the future sustainability and productivity of our islands,” the Prime Minister said in Auckland following the meeting.

The Prime Minister was accompanied by senior officials of the Prime Minister’s Office and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade and will travel onwards to Palau where His Lordship is leading the Government of Tonga’s delegation to the 45th Pacific Islands Leaders Meeting.
