“The Birthday of His Imperial Majesty is often a moment of solemn reflection for the People of Japan – and it is an opportunity to renew my commitment and determination as the Ambassador of Japan to the Kingdom of Tonga, “ said His Excellency Dr. Kazuchika Hamuro, who hosted the reception. “On such an occasion this reaffirms our duties and missions to promote our long-standing and cordial friendship between Japan and the Kingdom of Tonga,” His Excellency added.

The Prime Minister further highlighted that Tongan citizens have been fortunate to enhance their individual endeavours through scholarships and opportunities to study and play rugby in Japan, as a result remittances and establishment of local businesses had contributed enormously to the Tongan economy.

“Tonga continues to benefit from Japan’s ongoing bilateral assistance programs, and have shared successful cooperation in a wide range of areas including trade, sports, marine research, infrastructure, education and health,” said the Honourable Prime Minister.

“Japanese Language and soroban remains the gateway to intercultural understanding –and the Embassy remains committed to promoting these two areas as cornerstones and historical legacy of Japan’s bilateral relationship,” said Ambassador Hamuro. The Embassy and the Tonga Institute of Education (TIOE) has launched a Japanese Language Centre- a small classroom that houses big dreams and hopes for the people of both countries.  The JENESIS 2.0 program is also an example of people-to-people exchange programs between Tonga and Japan.

Next year Tonga will host the 2014 Trade Investment Symposium and in 2015, Japan will host the 7th Pacific Leaders Meeting (PALM 7) in Fukushima  - and will be an opportunity for Japan and Tonga to celebrate the 45th year anniversary of establishment of the diplo matic relation since 1970.
