15TH ANNIVERSARY OF THE DIPLOMATIC RELATIONS BETWEEN KINGDOM OF TONGA AND PEOPLE’S REPUBLIC OF CHINA IN BEIJING

20 November 2013 : The Embassy of the Kingdom of Tonga in Beijing,  celebrated Tonga National Day on Monday 4th November, 2013 from 6.30 to 9.30 pm; as well as commemorating the 15th Anniversary of the Establishment of the Diplomatic Relations between the Kingdom of Tonga and the People’s Republic of China. The event took place at the Marriott Beijing North East Hotel, Beijing.

Celebrating National Days is a common event amongst the Embassies of the various approximately 200 countries represented and situated in Beijing.  Amongst those countries who have Embassies in Beijing are from the African, European, Middle East, North and South America, Caribbean and Pacific Region. The two common purposes that Embassies celebrate on national days annually, is the National Day of the country concern as well as commemorating the establishment of their diplomatic relations with the People’s Republic of China.

As for the Embassy of the Kingdom of Tonga, Tonga National Day was a huge opportunity for Tonga to express its appreciation to the people and government of the People’s Republic of China for all the financial aids and technical assistance given to Tonga, and to showcase its culture, handicrafts, tourist activities in the various island groups of Tonga,  to potential investors and tourists.

The programme started with a flag ceremony where both national flags of both countries were carried by representatives from His Majesty’s Armed Forces and the People’s Liberation Army. This was followed by the launching of the official Tongan new stamps designed specifically for the 15th Anniversary of the diplomatic relations between the Kingdom of Tonga and the People’s Republic of China. Introduction of the VIP guests which included the Guest of Honour, Madame Li Xiaolin, President of Chinese People’s Association for Friendship with Foreign Countries, Her Royal Highness Princess Salote Mafile’o Pilolevu Tuita, President of Tonga/China Friendship Association, Vice Minister of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Mr Li Baodong.

The programme of the celebration was  mastered by the Master of Ceremony, Mrs Sesilia Latu. Speeches included the welcome speech by His Excellency Ambassador Siamelie Latu followed by remarks by HRH Princess Salote Mafile’o Pilolevu Tuita representing the government of the Kingdom of Tonga and the last speech by Madame Li, representing the government of the People’s Republic of China and its people.

The cake to mark the 15th anniversary of the establishment of the diplomatic relations between the Kingdom of Tonga and the People’s Republic of China, was jointly cut by HRH Princess Salote Mafileo Pilolevu Tuita and the Guest of Honour, Madame Li Xiaolin.

The cultural items was jointly performed by the Embassy and the 6th Armoured Division Band of the People’s Liberation Army. The entertainment included a solo dance, and group dance by students both from universities in Nan Chang, Wuhan and Beijing.

There were about 300 guests who attended Tonga National Day which included Ambassadors and Madames and Diplomatic Staff from the Pacific Embassies, and countries who have diplomatic relations with Tonga like Brunei, Thailand, Malaysia, Singapore,  as well as from other countries like Jamaica, Uruguay and Mauritius. In addition, business partners of the Government of Tonga in China who also sponsored the National Day were present and which included Donjiu Liquors  Co. Ltd.,  Huawei Technologies Ltd; Yanbei Group; China Brother Investment Holding, China Civil Engineering Construction Corporation;  ZTE Corporation; and YanJian Group.
