Prime Minister to attend the 68th Session of the UN General Assembly in New York

18 September 2013 Lord Tu'ivakano will attend the 68th session UN General Assembly in New York following by the Minister of Finance and National Planning, Hon. Lisiate 'Akolo.

The Prime Minister and Minister for Foreign Affairs and Trade, Lord Tu'ivakano will attend the High-level meetings of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) on its 68th Session that will be held at the UN Headquarters in New York, from 24 to 30 September 2013. 

During this time, the Prime Minister will accompany His Majesty King Tupou VI at the UN General Assembly, where His Majesty will deliver the Statement of the Kingdom of Tonga as Head of State.  

At the same time, the Prime Minister will endeavour to sign the Pacific Regional Data Repository plan (PRDR), a regional initiative endorsed by the Pacific Islands Leaders to support the UN initiative for Decade of Sustainable Energy For All (SE4All). To this end, the PRDR will be signed during the United Nations General Assembly by all Pacific Leaders and all Development Partners that are involved in energy assistance. 

The UN General Assembly will address the theme: Post-2015 Development Agenda: Setting the Stage. This will focus on the realization of the achievements of the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) by 2015 and the concerted effort made by UN Member States to address global poverty, the inclusion of persons with disabilities and other development goals. Tonga's Prime Minister has been invited to address a side-event hosted by the World Bank and United Nations Development Programme on MDG Accelerations. Tonga has been chosen from the region to present on MDG progress and Pacific perspectives. 

Within the margins of the United Nations General Assembly, the Prime Minister will conduct bilateral meetings with United Nations member states on matters of mutual, global cooperation and sustainable development crucial for Tonga. 

Accompanying the Lord Prime Minister to the UNGA Meeting will be the Minister for Finance and National Planning, Hon. Lisiate ‘Akolo.
