Tonga Tourism Authority Board of Directors

09 May 2013 Tourism has demonstrated potential to lead the country's economic recovery and long term growth with tourism receipts increasing from TOP49.6million in 2008 to TOP68.6 million in 2012.

International best practice shows that maximizing this tourism growth requires effective destination marketing that is driven by the private sector. The Tonga Tourism Authority Act 2012 provides for the establishment of a private sector led Tourism Authority to drive the marketing of Tonga as a tourism destination under a strong partnership between the public and private sectors. The Hon. Minister for Tourism stated that "the establishment of the Authority is expected to increase the competitive advantage of Tonga as a tourism products we have to offer, and allow the industry to drive sustainable economic growth for the Kingdom".

The governance of the new Authority is led by a Board of Directors consisting of seven (7) private sector members and two (2) ex-officio members from Government. On Friday 3 may 2013, Government appointed Papiloa Foliaki, Ross Chapman, Paul Johansson, Tevita Palu, Stafford 'Aho, Shane Walker and Kololiana Naufahu as the Directors of the first Boa4rd of the newly established Tonga Tourism Authority. These seven directors will be assisted by the CEO for the Ministry of Finance and National Planning and CEO for Commerce, Tourism and Labour who are appointed as ex-officio Directors of the Board under the Tonga Tourism Authority Act 2012. Government has also appointed Mr. Ross Chapman, as the Chairperson of the Board.

The Hon. Minister for Tourism, Mr. Viliami Latu stated that "the appointment of the first Board of Directors is a milestone for tourism development in Tonga and is the first step to the establishment of the new Authority and we trust that their leadership will spearhead tourism development in the country". The Ministry will work closely with the Board of Directors to appoint a General Manager and senior staff of the Authority in anticipation of having the Authority fully operational by the beginning of the third quarter of this year.

The newly appointed Board presents a diversity of skills and backgrounds that is reflective of the dynamics of the industry and is considered essential to drive tourism development in Tonga and deliver sustainable benefits to the private sector and the communities at large.
