High-level support for small islands

Energy is a fundamental requirement for the Kingdom in its social and economic development and in enhancing the livelihood and wellbeing of all Tongans. Accessible, affordable and sustainable electricity that is environmentally friendly and commercially viable has always been a Government priority.
Having recognized the importance of achieving this  target of 50% electricity reduction through the use of renewable sources, Tonga signed on to the IRENA Council in 2010.  Since then, it continues its commitment to a strong advocacy role on the Council of the International Renewable Energy Agency (‘IRENA') and the critical work that the Agency does in pursuing a more secure and sustainable energy path.  IRENA's wide range of expertise has been invaluable in helping the Kingdom of Tonga plan for the future.
In addition to providing high-level support for Pacific Islands like Tonga, IRENA helped deliver the Off Grid component of the TERM (Tonga Energy Roadmap), as well as giving essential guidance on policies and finance mechanism.
