Tonga National Population Census 2011; Preliminary Count

22 December 2011. Tongan version Tonga National Population Census 2011 was conducted at the mid-night of 30 November 2011, the census field enumeration ended on 9 December, to-date 22 December, the second week of census questionnaire collection. Thus, the Statistics Department is pleased to release the Preliminary Count of this Census 2011 which accounted to 103,036 people, an annual increase of 0.2% from 101,991 people recorded in the Population Census of 2006.

Other interested figures recorded in this preliminary count are as follows;

• Of the total population of 103,036 people recorded in the Census 2011, there were 52,001 male and 51,035 female,
• The total households in the kingdom has increased to 18,053 in Census 2011 by 3.4% from 17,462 households in Census 2006,
• By island divisions, only Tongatapu population was increased by an annual growth of 0.8%, while all outer islands were decreased. The major decrease was recorded at Ongo Niua by -5.2%, followed by Ha'apai -2.6%, ‘Eua -0.8%, and Vava'u -0.7,
• Of the Census by districts, the population of all Tongatapu districts (except Kolovai) increased, Kolovai decreased by an annual rate of 0.1%. Conversely, the population of all districts of outer islands (except Motu district in Vava'u) decreased, while Motu District in Vava'u increased by an annual rate of 2.7%,
• Tongatapu has a predominant share of 73% of the total population, followed by Vava'u 15%, Ha'apai 7%, ‘Eua 5%, and Ongo Niua 1%.

The figures from this preliminary count were recorded directly from the census summary of each census enumerator. It is expected, these figures will have slight variation once the final processing of census data is completed.
