The Tonga Tourism Sector Road Map

E-mail Print PDF
18 April 2013 Tourism has been identified as the major economic development opportunity for the country, with potential to provide broad based employment and income generation, as well as support the retention of cultural traditions and the sustainable management of the nation's environmental assets.

The Tonga Strategic Development Framework highlights the priority placed on growing the tourism sector.

In order to facilitate and accelerate growth in the sector, the Ministry of Commerce Tourism and Labour is working with other key stakeholders to develop an overarching sector framework for tourism - the Tonga Tourism Roadmap.  This Roadmap will develop a clear way forward for the future and identify priorities and initiatives for implementation in the next five years.

In order to have a higher level of growth for the tourism sector, strategic choices need to be made to remove the impediments to growth.  The major impediments and some of the options are outlined in a Situation Analysis and Tourism Sector Framework Paper to promote debate and facilitate the development of clear strategies and priorities.

The Situation Analysis and Tourism Sector Framework Paper has been prepared to promote discussion and stakeholder engagement by documenting the context and key issues which face the tourism sector in Tonga, together with some options and potential solutions.    The paper will be the basis of additional consultation with a wider range of stakeholder groups scheduled to be undertaken by the consultants for the second and third week of April 2013.
