31 May 2011  The Tonga Visitor Bureau's (TVB) long-term business partner, Air Pacific, has commissioned travel writer Ms Lisa Falconer to feature Tonga in her next story for the airline's in-flight magazine, Islands. Ms Falconer will be travelling with her partner Mr. Josef Loew, Air Pacific's new Chief Commercial Officer.

The pair arrived yesterday for a 7-day charter around Vava'u with yachting operator, Moorings.  The feature story focuses on sailing in Tonga and will appear in the October-November edition of Islands. The magazine is distributed in-flight and across Air Pacific's global offices, reaching approximately 200,000 readers.

Air Pacific held a reception last night while the guests met with TVB staff for an ocean-front breakfast this morning before their transfer to Vava'u. A farewell dinner will take place on Monday, 6 June.

Mr. Sakopo Lolohea, CEO for the Ministry of Tourism, welcomes the visit. "Travel writers play a crucial role in generating publicity and raising Tonga's profile as an international tourist destination," he says. "Sailing is one of Tonga's key attractions and Vava'u has been well-established in yachting circles for many years now. We are very excited about the interest this feature will initiate, particularly across our major markets in Australia and New Zealand."

The TVB's strong relationship with Air Pacific is long-standing and reflects years of collaboration between the two organisations. A team of senior staff from the TVB and the Tongan tourism industry have recently returned from the United States on a joint venture promotional tour with Air Pacific. In addition, Tonga appears in the current edition of Islands with a showcase article about swimming with the whales.

Additional writers from the Australian and New Zealand travel industries will be visiting Tonga over the next few months, highlighting various attractions and aspects of Tongan culture. "We cannot underestimate the potential impact these articles may have on how tourists think about travel in the Pacific", Mr. Lolohea explains. "With our current rebranding campaign, raising awareness of Tonga as a fantastic holiday destination is an important component of the TVB's marketing plan".

Ms Falconer and Mr. Loew will return to Fiji with Air Pacific on Tuesday, 7 June.
