The salary of the of the Renewable Energy Adviser, Hon ‘Akau'ola, has received front page treatment in the Kele'a (3 Jun 10) and Talaki (2 Jun 10) newspapers as a result of criticisms raised by the two People's Representatives to Parliament, ‘Akilisi Pohiva and ‘Isileli Pulu.

Hon ‘Akau'ola is on contract to the Tonga Government as a Consultant, and like other Consultants employed by the Tonga Government, details of his contract are a matter for him and Government.

What is public knowledge however is that Hon ‘Akau'ola's work in coordinating the development of the unique Tonga Energy Roadmap 2010-20 is receiving world-wide recognition and support from development partners and energy industry experts alike.

The Tonga Energy Roadmap is unique because it is the first time ever that a sector specific outcome has seen all major development partners, the Government, the private sector, and the civil society sector, working together in a coordinated manner in pursuit of the Government's target of achieving 50% of electricity supply from renewable energy within 3 years, as well as reducing Tonga's vulnerability to oil price shocks and supply chain interruptions.

Hon ‘Akau'ola's work on the Tonga Energy Roadmap is already attracting an unprecedented amount of financial and technical assistance to Tonga which in the immediate future is estimated to amount to $50 million pa'anga over the three year period between 2010 and 2012.

The Tonga Energy Road Map is now being referred to the Prime Minister of Tonga and the head of each respective development partner and regional organisation and an appropriate signing ceremony is expected to be carried out later this June.
