Japan and Tonga Commemorate the Completion of the Earthquake Observation Network Upgrade Project

Japan and Tonga commemorated the completion of the four-year technical cooperation project on earthquake observation on November 2, 2011. The Commemoration Ceremony was hosted by the Geological Services Unit of Ministry of Lands, Survey and Natural Resources of the Kingdom of Tonga.

During this Ceremony, in the presence of Lord Ma'afu, Honorable Minister for Lands, Survey and Natural Resources and Environment and Climate Change, His Excellency, Mr. Yasuo TAKASE, Ambassador of Japan to the Kingdom of Tonga, appreciated warm sympathy and assistances from the people and the Government of the Kingdom of Tonga to the victims of the great earthquakes and tsunami in Japan last March. He also reiterated that sharing knowledge, experience, and expertise is the pivotal part of this technical cooperation and asked the participants of the project to maintain the network of experts and partners to sustain the earthquake observation network.

This four-year technical project to upgrade the seismic network, which was originally installed as the technical cooperation project between Japan and the Kingdom of Tonga in 2003, was launched in 2007, though the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA).

The project aims at enhancing the capacity of the Government of Tonga to provide earthquake information for tsunami warning in a timely manner. The project included the provision and the installment of state-of-the-arts software and equipments such as a new satellite-telemetry system of broadband seismometers and the central data center facilities, which enable the Government of the Kingdom of Tonga to operate automatically and disseminate information to subscribers of the network.
