23rd June 2015  Her Majesty Queen Nanasipau’u Tuku’aho today launched a pictorial history book - Tonga’s Royal Family – Photographs from Royal Collections – at the Fa’onelua Convention Centre here in Nuku’alofa. The book, published by Vava’u Press, has contributions from Queen Nanasipau’u, Dr Adrieene L Kaeppler and Mary Lyn Fonua.

Printed in China, the hard cover book contains photos from Tonga’s history – with black and white photos as well of past monarchs such as King Tupou 1, King Tupou 2, Queen Salote Tupou 3, King Tupou 4 and the late King George Tupou 5.

Queen Nanasipau’u said the book was an important part of Tonga’s history and tells stories that she hopes would help Tongans appreciate who they are.

She said the work of putting the book together was a challenge that they had to go through, especially with the recollection of photos that needed to be used.

Historian and anthropologist Dr Kaeppler said she was honoured to have been part of the team to put the book together.

She said her early meeting with the late Queen Salote and other well-know Tongans helped her understand the Tongan culture and put her in contact with members of the Royal Family.

During her presentation she revealed how awe-struck she was with Tongan culture, especially the Coronation and Investure events which tie in with Tongan tradition.

Ms Mary Fonua said the book was something they had wanted to publish for almost 30 years.
Publisher Pesi Fonua said the book was “a milestone” for Vava’u Press, which started publishing in the late 1990’s.

“We are proud to have been able to put this together,” Mr Fonua said after the launch.
The launch was planned to coincide with the launch of the Coronation Week here in Tonga, which starts on Saturday.

Also at the launch were other members of the Royal Family, including Princess Siu’ilikutapu Kalaunivalu Fotofili, Crown Princess Sinaitakala Tuku’aho, Princess 'Ofeina-'e-he-Langi Fakafanua, Baroness Tuputupu Vaea  and Hon Lupepau’u Taione.

Members of the Diplomatic Corps also joined those who were present for the launch.
Father Sio Leota of the Anglican Church of Tonga blessed the event with prayers before and after the launch.
Closeto 100 people attended the launch.

Those who purchased special copies of the book were able to also get it autographed by Her Majesty and the presenters plus other members of the Royal Family.

Copies of the book will be sold at local bookstores here in Nuku’alofa and at Fua’amotu International Airport.
