Moments to treasure as Monarch and Head of State visit school

2 August 2011 In the midst of a busy week in the event of His Majesty's Official Birthday celebration, His Majesty King George Tupou V has graciously accompanied the Australian Head of State - The Governor-General, Her Excellency Ms Quentin Bryce on her education visitation programme to the Government Primary School (GPS) of Nuku'alofa this morning.

Upon His Majesty and the Governor-General's arrival at the school, a crowd of students, parents and teachers flanked the entrance gate and tapa (ngatu) clad driveway with waving Tonga flags to greet the beloved Monarch and Australia's Head of State. These are proud and historical moments that these children will never forget.

The School visit also included The Princess Royal, Her Royal Highness, Princess Salote Mafile'o Pilolevu Tuita, His Excellency Mr Bryce and the Australian High Commissioner to Tonga, His Excellency Thomas Roth who was also greeted by the Hon. ‘Ana Taufe'ulungaki and her Director, Mrs ‘Emili Pouvalu and senior Education officers from the Ministry of Education, Women Affairs and Culture.

The Nuku'alofa Government Primary School caters for some 571 students with 20 teachers in 2011. There is a total of 19 classes.

During the visit, His Majesty and the Governor General observed some teaching demonstration of the English language and Mathematics subjects using Australian funded curriculum materials for Class 4 level.

There were also children presentations and a brief entertainment.

Upon Their departure, His Majesty and the Governor-General observed a physical fitness performance by the school children in appreciation of the Royal Party's visit.
