HM Queen Halaevalu Mata'aho lays foundation for Tungi Arcade re-development

7 January 2010  Queen Halaevalu Mata'aho officiated at the Laying of the foundation ceremony at the site along Taufa'ahau Road, where the Tungi Arcade, destroyed during the riots in November 2006 but to be rebuild by the Free Wesleyan Church of Tonga. Despite the overcast skies and heavy rain an hour before 10 o'clock, the ceremony went on to schedule with prayers led by the President of the Church, Rev. Dr. ‘Ahio and other clergy with the Maopa choir rendering the hymns and anthems.

Also present at the ceremony were the Lord Prime Minister, Tu'ivakano and other Ministers of the Crown, the former Deputy Prime Minister but now Lord Tangi of Vaonukonuka and His Excellency, Mr. Wang Donghua, the Chinese Ambassador and other officials from the Embassay members of the clergy from the Nuku'alofa district Tungi Arcade Board members..

The ceremony's' MC, was the General Secretary of the Church, Rev. Dr. Tevita Koloa'ia Havea who delivered the welcoming speech upon the arrival of Her Majesty the Queen and other guests.
The construction comes under the rebuilding projects of the Central Business District (CBD) under the loan from the People of China's Government. The costing of rebuilding the new multi-storied Tungi Arcade building is about T$16 million to be paid back in 15 years, with 5 years grace period at the beginning.
