E-mail Print PDF
7 July 2011 The powerful 7.8 earthquake which hit the coasts of the Kermadec Islands near New Zealand which has ushered a tsunami warning for all areas of New Zealand and the Kermadec Islands including Tonga this morning has now been cancelled.

However, the marine threat remains in place for New Zealand and the Kermadec. The quake at 7.03am was at a depth of 48.5km. It was 12km from Raoul Island and 920km from Tonga. The Kermadecs lie 800km north of New Zealand.

In Nuku'alofa, the tsunami warning bulletin has issued advisory to government agencies to call for nationwide alert. Most schools and offices came to an early close this morning just after the alert was issued at 9:0am this morning. Although the tsunami warning has been lifted and no immediate damages or signs of increase in wave activity occuring, the Tonga Meteorological Services still emphasises that safety for all is top priority. It is also understood that Tonga and New Zealand locationwise are within proximity of each other.

The latest Tsunami Bulletin Number 002 from the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center in Hawaii is as follows:

SEA LEVEL READINGS INDICATE A TSUNAMI WAS GENERATED. IT MAY HAVE BEEN DESTRUCTIVE ALONG COASTS NEAR THE EARTHQUAKE EPICENTER. FOR THOSE AREAS - WHEN NO MAJOR WAVES ARE OBSERVED FOR TWO HOURS AFTER THE ESTIMATED TIME OF ARRIVAL OR DAMAGING WAVES HAVE NOT OCCURRED FOR AT LEAST TWO HOURS THEN LOCAL AUTHORITIES CAN ASSUME THE THREAT IS PASSED. DANGER TO BOATS AND COASTAL STRUCTURES CAN CONTINUE FOR SEVERAL HOURS DUE TO RAPID CURRENTS. AS LOCAL CONDITIONS CAN CAUSE A WIDE VARIATION IN TSUNAMI WAVE ACTION THE ALL CLEAR DETERMINATION MUST BE MADE BY LOCAL AUTHORITIES.

NO TSUNAMI THREAT EXISTS FOR OTHER COASTAL AREAS IN THE PACIFIC ALTHOUGH SOME OTHER AREAS MAY EXPERIENCE SMALL SEA LEVEL CHANGES.

THE TSUNAMI WARNING IS NOW CANCELLED FOR ALL AREAS COVERED BY THIS CENTER.

THIS WILL BE THE FINAL BULLETIN ISSUED FOR THIS EVENT UNLESS ADDITIONAL INFORMATION BECOMES AVAILABLE.
