National Radio-thon to Raise Funds for Christchurch Earthquake Victims

22 September 2010 - Plans for a huge national radio-thon to raise funds for the victims of the massive earthquake that struck Christchurch in New Zealand on 4 September, are being finalised by a Committee established by government with the active involvement of business houses, the Churches and community organisations.

The radio-thon will be held on Saturday, 25 September, and broadcast live via the national radio station, A3Z, between 9.00am and 1.00pm. It is expected that the radio-thon will be officially opened by the Hon Prime Minister, Dr. the Hon Feleti Vaka'uta Sevele.

Letters appealing for donations have already been sent by the Hon Prime Minister to individual business houses, Church leaders, Kava Clubs, as well as Village Development Committees. Appeals to the general public are being broadcast regularly via the country's three FM stations and one short wave radio station.

Individual schools are already raising funds through mufti - days and about 200 senior students from high schools and the teacher's college will also be collecting public donations on the streets on Saturday.

Donation boxes have also been opened up at various supermarkets, retail outlets and at banks. Bank accounts have also been opened at the ANZ Bank as well as the Tonga Development Bank. Details of the accounts are:
