Lord Tangi of Vaonukonuka

His Majesty The King has been graciously pleased to grant the honour of  Life Peerage to Dr. Viliami Ta'u Tangi, interim Health Minister and Deputy Prime Minister, in recognition of his dedicated service to the Crown and to the Kingdom.

Viliami Ta'u Tangi has been appointed to the title of Lord Tangi of Vaonukonuka in a Investiture ceremony by the Lord Chamberlain, held at the Tangi Residence at Tofoa on Thursday evening 30 December 2010.

The Life peers will enjoy the privileges and benefits of a Noble of the Realm. Vaonukonuka is a village in Hunga, Vava'u.


His Majesty King Taufa'ahau Tupou IV appointed Dr. Viliami Tau Tangi, Chief Surgeon Specialist as Minister of Health with effect from 01 March 1999 . Dr. Tangi joined the civil service in January 1973 upon successfully completing the Diploma in Medicine and Surgery from the Fiji School of Medicine .From 1973 to 1978 Dr. Tangi was posted throughout the country which included Niuatoputapu Health Centre, Vaiola, Niu'ui and Ngu Hospital's respectively.Dr. Tangi successfully completed Part I of the Fellowship Examinations of the Royal Australasian College of Surgeon in 1979 and Part II of the Fellowships Examinations in 1983. In so doing, Dr. Tangi became the second Tongan national to be admitted to the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons, the first being the late Dr. Tevita Puloka.

In acknowledging this achievement His Majesty's Government promoted Dr. Tangi to Surgeon Specialist in 1985 and Chief Surgeon Specialist in 1991. In 1985 Dr. Tangi was seconded to the Government of Niue as a Paediatric Surgeon. Dr. Tangi has been appointed Acting Medical Superintendent (Vaiola Hospital) and  Acting Director of Health during the course of his employment.

During his training and pursuit of continuing education Dr. Tangi took up appointments as Senior House Surgeon (Thames Valley), Medical Graduate Demonstrator in  Anatomy (Otago University), Surgical Registrar (Northland Base Hospital and Middlemore Hospital), Lecturer in Paediatric Surgery (University of Newcastle, New South Wales),  Senior Surgical Registrar (Newcastle Mater Hospital) and Senior Staff Surgeon (Griffith Base Hospital, New South Wales).

Dr. Tangi in his capacity as Minister of Health has attended the annual WHO Regional Committee Meeting for the Western Pacific Region and the annual World Health Assembly. With his Ministerial appointment Dr. Tangi continues to provide surgical services and continues to participate in scientific conferences organized by the Royal Australian College of Surgeons.

During the annual WHO Regional Committee Meeting for the Western Pacific in September 2003 Dr. Tangi was elected to fill 1 of the 2 vacancies on WHO Executive Board which is WHO's highest decision making body and reflects Dr. Tangi's contribution to international health since his Ministerial appointment.In May 2006 His Majesty King Taufa'ahau Tupou IV appointed Dr. Tangi as Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Health and has subsequently been appointed Acting Prime Minister during the course of this appointment.
