The MV ‘Otuanga'ofa has been providing safe sea transportation services twice to three times a week to the outer islands groups after it was first commissioned two years ago, by Her Royal Highness The Princess Royal, Princess Salote Mafile'o Pilolevu Tuita in October 2010.
The MV ‘Otuanga'ofa have been providing safe sea transportation to the Ha'apai, Vava'u and Niua Group twice a week, offering services that is consistent with international best practice, with amenities that is modern, clean and affordable shipping services to the people of Tonga over the years.
This marks an important step forward in the development, management and administration of sea transportation in Tonga and importantly provides a beautiful, safe, secure and modern ferry for the inter island shipping services in Tonga.
The MV ‘Otuanga'ofa is the result of an aid grant from the Japanese Government for the construction of the new interisland ferry for Tonga, and the 1,500 ton vessel was constructed by the ISB Co. Ltd Shipyard in Chiba Japan.
The Acting Prime Minister and Minister for Infrastructure, Hon. Samiu Kuita Vaipulu joined the Japanese Ambassador Mr. Yasuo Takase, the Friendly Islands Shipping Agency (FISA) General Manager, Captain Vaka'utapola Vi and hundreds of guests from His Majesty's Government and private enterprises onboard the MV ‘Otuanga'ofa on Friday evening, 31 August, 2012 to mark the prestigious occasion.
The vessel measures 53.0 m in length, 13.5 m in breadth with a total loading capacity of 520 tons. It can accommodate up to 400 passengers, and a cargo hold of 251 m2 area x 4.55 m headroom. The ferry has 2 main engines each of 1,000 horsepower to run at 11.5 knots.
