Ministerial Appointment and Cabinet Reshuffle

5 February 2013 The People's Representative to Parliament for Tongatapu 6 Constituency, and the Chairman of the Committee of the Whole of the Legislative Assembly of Tonga. Mr. Siosifa Tu'utafaiva, has been appointed as the new Minister for Police, Prisons and Fire Services, as well as Minister for Revenue Services, effective as from 2 February, 2013.

The Revenue Services include the Department of Revenue and Customs Department. Hon. Tu'utafaiva, after his appointment which took place at the Ha'akame Free Wesleyan Church last Saturday, thanked His Majesty and the Lord Prime Minister for the trust given to him and he will perform the tasks assigned to him to the best of his knowledge and ability for the people of Tonga, according to law. Hon. Tu'utafaiva is also an active member of the Friendly Islands People's Democratic Party headed by Mr. Samuela ‘Akilisi Pohiva, MP. He added that his party is delighted of his appointment and he will take their voice to Cabinet.

At the same time, Hon. Sosefo Fe'aomoeata Vakata has been appointed as the Minister for Public Enterprises, relieving his Revenue Services portfolio. The Ministry of Public Enterprises is looking after fifthteen public enterprises of Government.

Hon. William Clive Edwards continues as the Minister for Justice, but relieving his Public Enterprises portfolio.

His Majesty The King approved these appointments at the recommendation of the Lord Prime Minister, according to the Constitution.

People's Tongatapu 7 Representative sworn in as new MAFFF Minister

19 July 2012. The People's Representative for Tongatapu 7, Mr. Sangster Saulala confirmed the acceptance of his ministerial appointment when he was sworn in at the Legislative Assembly on July 19, 2012.

The former ‘Otumotuanga'ofa Democratic Party member, Mr. Saulala is now the Minister for Agriculture, Food, Forestry and Fisheries,

Earlier this month, he relinquished the same ministerial appointment after a one-day resignation. However, the results of a recent independent survey carried out in the former People's Representative Tongatapu 7 constituency, highlighted that 71% of Mr Saulala's constituency did not support the Parliament's motion of no confidence to oust the Prime Minister Lord Tu'ivakano and his Government.

Former Deputy Speaker appointed as Minister for Health

2 July 2012 Following the resignation of former Health Minister, ‘Uliti Uata on 25 June, 2012, the Reverend Noble Lord Tu'I'afitu, Deputy Speaker of the Legislative Assembly have now resigned to take up new ministerial appointment of new Minister for Health.

The Rev. Lord Tu'I'afitu was sworn  in as new Minister today, 2 July, to take new ministerial post.

The Former Deputy Speaker is also the Noble's Number 1 Representative for the Vava'u Group.

Meanwhile, the position of Deputy Speaker of the House, has now been appointed to the Noble's Number 2 Representative for the Ha'apai Group, the Hon. Lord Tu'iha'ateiho.

May 2, 2012: ministerial portfolio re-assignment

On 13 April 2012, His Majesty's Cabinet approved the decision to appoint the following ministerial re-assignments, effective from 1 May 2012

1.       Hon. Lisiate ‘Aloveita ‘Akolo  (former Minister for Police, Prisons & Fire Services) is appointed Minister for Finance & National Planning

2.       Hon. Sunia Manu Fili (former Minister for Finance & National Planning) is appointed  Minister for Police, Prisons & Fire Services

3.       Hon. Sosefo Fe'aomoeata Vakata,  (former Minister for Training, Employment, Youth & Sports) is appointed  Minister for Revenue Services

4.       Lord Vaea (former Minister for Training, Employment, Youth and Sports, Minister for Agriculture, Food, Forests and Fisheries)

This reshuffle will be in line with the Government restructure of July 1, 2012.

Ministerial Re-assignment

7 September 2011 His Majesty's Cabinet underwent changes last week with the re-assignment of 5 ministerial portfolios as appointed by His Majesty, on the advice of the Prime Minister, Lord Tu'ivakano.

The Minister for Finance, Hon Sunia Manu Fili has taken on the additional portfolio of revenue collection becoming the Minister for Finance, National Planning and Revenue Services.

Hon Lisiate ‘Aloveita ‘Akolo has assumed the important law enforcement responsibilities as the new Minister for Police, Prisons and Fire Services.

Hon ‘Isileli Pulu is the new Minister for Labour, Commerce and Industries and Dr the Hon Viliami Uasike Latu, the new Minister for Tourism.

Hon William Clive Edwards took on the justice portfolio to become the Minster for Justice and Public Enterprises.

The new ministerial appointments took effect 31 August 2011 and 1 September 2011.
